I wouldn't be quite so sure of that. A surprising number of people have wet at least occasionally as an adult. However the numbers willing to admit the fact tend to be quite small because culturally a lot of folks are brought up to believe that it's something to be ashamed of.

While probably a number of men have spurted a bit in their pants for a variety of reasons, maybe not as many have had a full wetting. But you're absolutely right that men would be shamed, as opposed to women who would be pitied and consoled. We're supposed to be the stronger sex.

I think it's difficult to be sure of anything like the precise numbers due to reluctance to discuss such matters and my feeling is that wetting is under reported. However I've raised the subject of wetting and needing to pee with all sorts of people. Overwhelmingly the majority, I'd say 98%, have told me they've got into desperate situations when they've really been bursting. It's been less clear how that's extrapolated out into actual wetting, but I think it's a fairly safe bet that it's happened to most people at least occasionally. The minority who insist they've never got desperate or wet have either been extremely lucky or are lying.

It’s the truly authentic wetting or desperate situations that are experienced by lads who would be absolutely horrified or mortified by having an accident that really fascinate me. The vast majority of blokes recalling such experiences, either or here or on social media, are from those who actually enjoy such situations - whether it be a genuine thrill or just a slight intrigue.

That’s why any such genuine incidents are so rarely talked about - because the lads it happens to, probably incredibly rarely, would be too embarrassed to admit it.

One of my favourite tweets was @TomOz89 “I think the closest I’ve ever been to genuinely wetting myself was on one of the crappy rail replacement buses from Norwich to Ipswich which, you’ll be surprised to hear, had no toilets onboard. The two pints before I got on might not have helped either…”

I wonder how many times he’s been brave enough to share that story with his mates?

But just imagine if he hadn’t been able to last out? Would he ever have told anyone, I wonder?
