Fascinating account, Lee. Not being able to view Channel 4 from here in NL, I hadn't heard of Ben Shephard, but Wikipedia confirms he presented that Channel 4 breakfast show in 1998 as his first TV career breakthrough when he would have been about 24 years old. It sounds a plausible story, in the sense that I can imagine the TV floor management coming up with that solution for a presenter needing to pee so badly that he can't sit still. Highly unusual of course! And how humiliating it must have been for him.

I can get BBC1 here and remember an episode of "Have I got news for you" in which one of the panelists, Russell Brand, had to leave his place temporarily because "I need to pee badly" - those were his words. The camera showed him getting up and going out, then focussed on the face of the presenter who looked genuinely annoyed. There was no attempt to make any joke of the incident in what is otherwise a very humorous programme. The programme doesn't go out live, but it is recorded in front of a live audience. The BBC could therefore have chosen to cut Russell's departure but instead chose to leave it in - perhaps because the programme continued without him and there would have been no explanation for the empty seat during the next few minutes if they didn't include the incident.

I'm sure that the physical setups of television studios vary, and while you'd expect toilets near offices and dressing rooms, the individual studios - like the gates at an airport - may be spread out some distance from the core facilities. Performers, like athletes, need to stay well hydrated (especially vocal chords). And when it's time for them to be on stage, they have to be there. I'll bet that full bladders are fairly common for live performers, and that they've learned to cope with that distraction. It's just once in a while that the urgency gets the better of them.

Regarding the weatherman, I suspect that he might be sitting down all the while needing to go, thinking that he could hold it until the end of his segment. Unfortunately he found it not the case when he had to stand up while on air. This situation could happen, perhaps, when his senses got diluted by fatigue while he pumped up on coffee.

That sounds likely. Standing up could indeed have been the factor which changed "I can wait till I've done this" to "I can't hold it!".

Perhaps, in addition to the standing up, the sudden nervousness caused by being live on air might have added to that effect too?

A quick general reminder to everyone:

Please make sure that any links to videos that you post are of subjects who are over 18 years old. If it's borderline, or if you're unsure, please don't take any risks. Posting a link to a list of hundreds of videos is obviously a risky thing to do unless it is your own list. Even if you vet them all and they're all fine, an unacceptable can be added later by the owner.

The guidelines are: all subjects of our interest are 18+ years old. And no sexual references here in General & Open (those can go in the Stronger Interests section).

Definitely one of my favourites because the situation is so unique. They're trying for an underwater world record in radio broadcasting. The presenter is submerged and being monitored by the fire brigade (not really, but close enough and difficult to translate) right in front of the train station and he's being ribbed mercilessly and passers-by are involved in the spectacle. After more than four hours he has to give up on the world record (2:25) because he desperately needs to piss - and that is before they've got him out of the suit. The other guy is an ass as well, telling him he'll only let him out if he's a good boy etc.
