Certainly genuine. He used poor judgment in getting on the elevator when his bladder was that full, but that's typical of the age. I wonder if any of the others had to pee but weren't saying so.
Perhaps his intention is to take the elevator to some place where he can pee. I'm thinking of residential buildings where there's at least a toilet in each home, but none outside.
