The Tube

Post by Fred »

I'm spending a lot of time watching Tube videos lately, and one British series, The Tube, has caught my interest. I watched one episode that was about New Year's Eve at one of the busiest stations, where tens of thousands of people would stream through on the one night. The video reported one incident of a man urinating on an escalator, but there must have been many. The majority of the late crowd that were obviously inebriated were young males. Figuring time, even assuming that they peed before leaving their last venue, it might have taken 10 or 15 minutes to walk to the station. Entrance to the station had to be blocked from time to time to prevent overcrowding (5-10 minutes), and when they got to a platform they might not be able to get on a train for a bit. So figure at least 30 - 45 minutes from pub to train, and possibly more. Those that might have arrived at the station already full would be in trouble. Then their trip home may have taken an hour more. :o

I imagine that the cleanup crew afterwards would have a mammoth job.

Thanks for posting Fred.

I remember watching that episode, as I like watching programs about trains. There are other tube / railway / police based shows that show a lot of drunk people urinating where they shouldn't. I remember watching one show where a man was caught urinating against the wall in a station in full view. Unfortunately only the after effects were shown, the drunk guy doing up his trousers, the puddle and police telling him off. Would have like to see what happened leading up to this!

There is also a clip that was posted here, it was interviewing people in a metro / subway station in the US I think and they started interviewing a man who was desperate and running towards the toilet. He squirmed for a little bit then said that he needed the toilet and ran away.

Its a long time since I was last in London, but worth noting there's not that many toilets I think in the Tube network? Certainly none on trains although I guess that's expected on a metro system, but if you're traveling from some of the outer reaches of the network it can still be a fair journey! I think we've all fantasised about guys getting caught short and indeed there are a few Tube related stories on here, but I wonder how often genuine accidents happen?

Yes Connor, certainly I've done my own share of fantasising about desperate guys on the crowded London Underground network. Saw one very obvious desperate case, one of a group of young men standing in a group in a train when I visited London in 2008. He looked like he was in real trouble, and I wonder whether he actually made it because even after you leave a train when it finally gets to where you need to be you have to deal with slow moving crowds and long escalators before finally... emerging into a crowded London street with still no obvious place to "go"!

The true accounts are well known too, and some people here, you included, also Lee, have written stories based on the true incidents.

Often the incidents involve soccer fans travelling in huge numbers to and from Wembley!

Another true incident which we were talking about here a few years ago and has stuck with me is the one found on Twitter (I think) and told by someone who lived in London and who was a court witness in an organised serious crime case. He had to travel by plane from London to Manchester together with a protection officer for his security. The young male officer in plain clothes arrived to meet him in London. Before they set off together they had a drink in a pub. Then they set off on a long Tube journey to go to Heathrow airport, and the officer needed to pee while in the Tube train, couldn't wait and wet his jeans there in the train! Then they had a problem on arrival at Heathrow because the airline didn't want to allow the officer on board in pee-soaked clothes, so an embarrassing phone call to his superiors was needed to get them to convince the airline staff that they had to let him on board because the court witness was so important and needed protected escort!

Do other people remember that story?

Oops, have I confused some of the reality with your story?
I do seem to remember that the guy concerned wrote more details somewhere else (a forum post somewhere perhaps?) than are contained in that tweet though.
Is your story about this incident still around somewhere by the way, Lee?

Of course there is also your classic story about the Leeds United fan on the tube train to Wembley, written before I was active on these sites, which you reposted on this board for those with access to Stronger Interests. I know you've written other stories too about guys wetting themselves on the Tube.

And Connor's story is also memorable, though I think that's about a commuter train in the region rather than the tube. That was based on a true incident too, wasn't it Connor?

Ah, thanks very much.
Here for your story in Stronger Interests.
And that thread led me to your original twitter find viewable by everyone here. And that does have more details than I can actually see in the tweet itself. (Maybe that's because I have no Twitter account, I don't know.)

Yes based on a true story, on a commuter train out of London. Two guys wet themselves because the train was so overcrowded they couldn't get near the toilets! Absolutely loved reading about that incident, tried to find out as much info as I could. Would have been amazing to make contact with the people involved!
